How gate fees actually work

Two systems, and the difference matters. Ballina and Byron/Myocum charge per 100 kg — you drive over the weighbridge full, tip off, weigh out empty, pay the difference. Lismore charges per tonne, and the gap between sorted and unsorted is the big one: $410 a tonne unsorted against $300 sorted. Sorting doesn't halve anything, but $110 a tonne is real money, which is why we sort loads before we get to the gate and why that saving is already inside our published prices. Vouchers, and why we can't use yours

Lismore households get two $82 waste vouchers a year, Byron Shire two $50 ones. Ballina Shire has none — and none of the three councils runs a kerbside bulky pickup, so vouchers are the only help going. The catch: they're household-only and can't be transferred to a contractor, so we can't take yours to the gate and knock it off your bill, and anyone who says they can is doing something the council doesn't allow. If you've got a trailer, use the voucher yourself — it's genuinely the cheapest option. If you don't, our price includes the gate fee either way. The voucher guide has the fine print.
