6x4 trailer, ~350 kg mixed household waste — about ~$138 at the gate.

Getting there

The Byron tip is the Byron Resource Recovery Centre at 115 The Manse Road, Myocum, about ten minutes from Mullumbimby and fifteen from Byron Bay. Weekdays it's open 8am–4pm. Weekends it's mornings only: 8.30am–11.30am, and it's closed on every public holiday. Phone 1300 652 625. Weighbridge in and out. The Re-Market tip shop is on site.

If you're doing your own run on a Saturday, be in the queue before eleven. This catches out more Byron locals than anything else on this page.

Before you go

Byron charges per 100 kg with no discount for sorting mixed waste — but the free streams are generous and the vouchers are real money. Figures checked August 2026:

  • General mixed waste (household or commercial, same rate): $39.50 per 100 kg, minimum $18. Demolition and construction waste is the same rate.
  • Mixed recycling, cardboard, polystyrene: $10 per 100 kg, minimum $5.
  • Scrap metal: $4.50 per 100 kg.
  • Mattresses: $40 each for a double or larger.
  • Fridges and air-conditioners: $50 each.
  • Green waste: rate not captured from the council PDF — mulch is sold back at $40 a cubic metre.
  • Free: e-waste (TVs, computers), gas bottles, fire extinguishers, paint, fluoro tubes, car and household batteries, motor and other oils, smoke detectors, mobile phones.
  • Vouchers: every rateable residential property in Byron Shire gets two $50 waste vouchers for 2026/27 — the rates notice is the voucher. They cover fridges, furniture, mattresses, carpet, garden waste, non-commercial reno waste and mixed household waste; not tyres, commercial waste, liquids or asbestos. Tenants need an owner-signed form. Unused balance is forfeited, so use the whole $50.
  • Free courtesy trailer: Byron Shire residents can borrow an 8x5 trailer free, weekdays only, pick up 8.30am and back by 2pm, booked through the council's Bookable system. You need your own tow vehicle and it's GPS-tracked.

Byron Shire has no kerbside bulky-waste collection. Leaving furniture on the nature strip is treated as illegal dumping with fines up to $4,000.

What a trailer load costs here

A level 6x4 trailer of mixed household rubbish is about 350 kg. At $39.50 per 100 kg that's 3.5 × $39.50 = about $138 at the gate (checked August 2026) — the dearest mixed rate per trailer of the three big tips. Heaped, around 500 kg, is about $198. There's no self-sort discount, but pulling the metal ($4.50 per 100 kg) and cardboard ($10) out of the load still matters: 100 kg of metal and cardboard weighed out separately saves you roughly $30.

Hand over both $50 vouchers and a level trailer is about $38.

That's the gate only. Add fuel, a weekday off work for the free trailer, or a Saturday-morning queue. Or it's from $155 and we do it — both of us, all the loading, tip fee included, and your vouchers come straight off the price.

Don't want to do the run? From $140

We load it, drive it, pay the gate and sort it — Byron runs from $140 for a single item, tip fee included. Call or text to book a free on-site quote.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Myocum tip's weekend hours?

Saturday and Sunday 8.30am to 11.30am only. Weekdays are 8am–4pm. Closed on all public holidays, including long-weekend Mondays. If you're coming from Byron or Ocean Shores with a load on a Saturday, leave early.

How do the Byron Shire $50 waste vouchers work?

Each rateable residential property gets two $50 vouchers per financial year, printed on the rates notice. Bring the notice to the weighbridge and $50 comes off the load. They cover mixed household waste, furniture, mattresses, whitegoods, carpet, garden waste and non-commercial reno waste, but not tyres, liquids, asbestos or commercial loads. Tenants need a form signed by the owner.

Is the free council trailer worth it?

If you've got a tow vehicle, a free weekday and a load that fits in an 8x5, yes — you pay only the gate fee. It's weekdays only, out at 8.30 and back by 2pm, so it doesn't suit anyone working Monday to Friday. For weekends, or if you don't want to do the lifting, that's us.
