Tip runs in Wardell
Wardell is about fifteen minutes down the river from our Ballina base, and it marks the southern edge of where we work — if you're in the village or on the flats around it, you're covered. Tip runs Wardell way follow the old Pacific Highway back north: since the bypass went in, the drive up to the Ballina Resource Recovery Centre on Southern Cross Drive is quick and quiet, and that's where every load ends up. The tip is open 8am to 4pm seven days, which suits us because we only work weekends — Saturday and Sunday, 7am to 5pm.
Most of what we cart out of Wardell comes off rural blocks. The village itself is small, but the cane country and acreage around it holds a lot of accumulated stuff: the shed that hasn't been properly emptied since before the 2022 flood, water-damaged furniture and carpet that got stacked "for later" and never left, fence posts, star pickets, a dead ride-on. Flood recovery moved fast on the houses and slower on the sheds, and four years on we're still pulling flood-era loads out of them.
Pricing is straightforward and Wardell is on the same rates as Ballina. A single item pickup starts at $140, and a full heaped 6x4 trailer runs $330 to $380 depending on what's in it — the exact table is below. What Ballina Shire Council will and won't take
Wardell sits in Ballina Shire, and the shire keeps it simple: red, yellow and green bins, and nothing else. There's no kerbside bulky-waste pickup and no tip vouchers, so anything that won't fit in a bin has to be carted to the Ballina tip yourself — or by us. The tip takes mixed household waste by weight, green waste under 300mm cheap at $8.90 per 100 kg, and bricks and concrete at $22.60 per 100 kg if they're sorted. Sorted scrap metal, e-waste, car batteries and household quantities of problem waste go free, though whitegoods need a degas certificate before the metal's free. They won't take asbestos or commercial chemicals. Dumping on the riverbank or a cane headland is a fineable offence.
Reuse before you dump
- The Salvage Shed at the Ballina tip takes furniture, tools, bikes and kitchen gear that still has life in it — open Tue to Fri 8.30am to 3.30pm and weekends 10am to 3pm, so we can drop salvageable pieces there on the same run.
- CRC problem waste at the tip is free for household quantities: paint, motor oil, batteries, gas bottles, fluoro tubes. Pull these out before the load gets weighed and they cost you nothing.
- Sorted scrap metal is free at the gate, so we keep steel, fencing wire and old roofing separate from the mixed waste.
