How to Get Rid of a Mattress in Ballina (2026 Options)
"Who in Ballina takes mattresses to the tip?" is one of the most common questions on the local Facebook groups, and the answers are always the same mix of "try Airtasker" and "just leave it out the front". Here's the real list of ways to get rid of a mattress in Ballina, what each one costs, and the one option that will get you fined. Fees checked August 2026.
What's the cheapest way to get rid of a mattress in Ballina?
Take it to the Ballina Resource Recovery Centre yourself. Ballina doesn't list a separate mattress fee; it goes over the weighbridge as household mixed waste at $34.60 per 100 kg, so a 30 to 40 kg queen mattress costs well under $20. There's no council kerbside pickup and no tip voucher in Ballina Shire, so if you can't get it to the tip, the next cheapest option is a paid pickup, from $140 with us as a single item.
Option 1: take it to the Ballina tip
The Ballina Resource Recovery Centre is at 169 Southern Cross Drive, West Ballina, open 8am to 4pm seven days, closed public holidays. You drive over the weighbridge, unload, drive over it again, and pay for the difference.
Mattresses aren't a line item on Ballina's web fee table, so they're charged by weight with the rest of your load. A single mattress is the lightest tip run you'll ever do. Note there's no published minimum charge on the web page either. Full fee list on the Ballina tip page.
Compare that to the neighbours: Lismore charges $39 per mattress, Byron's Myocum tip $40 for double or larger, and Nimbin $42. If you live in Ballina Shire you're at the cheapest mattress gate in the region.
The practical problems: a queen mattress doesn't fit in a hatchback, it's an awkward two-person lift, and a bare mattress on a roof rack on the Pacific Motorway is a bad idea (and a fine for an unsecured load). You'll want a ute or trailer and a strap.
Option 2: council pickup
There isn't one. Ballina Shire Council runs no kerbside bulky-waste collection and issues no tip vouchers; its waste pages list bins, the tip and an A to Z guide, nothing else. If a neighbour tells you council does an annual bulk collection, that's a memory of a program that isn't on the current council site.
Leaving the mattress on the nature strip "for council" is illegal dumping. Rangers do act on reports, especially in East Ballina and Lennox where a dumped mattress ends up in someone's beach photos.
Option 3: Airtasker or a man with a ute
Airtasker's median for mattress removal in Ballina is about $100, which sounds cheap until you read the fine print: that's the tasker's labour, and the tip fee, fuel and whether they actually turn up are on you and them to argue about. Some taskers are great. Some are a bloke with a Facebook page and a Hilux who'll take your $100 and your mattress and dump it in the bush, which is your problem when the ranger finds your old bedding.
If you go this route, ask where it's going and ask for the weighbridge receipt.
Option 4: book a pickup (our prices)
A mattress on its own is a single-item job: from $140, two of us, all the lifting, tip fee included, weighbridge receipt if you want it. If it's part of a bigger load (the old bed base, the couch, the shed), a mattress adds $70 to whatever trailer fraction you're at. Quarter trailer is $180, half is $240, full heaped trailer is $330 to $380.

Option 5: give it away (only if it's genuinely good)
A clean, stain-free, less-than-five-year-old mattress can go on a Buy Nothing or free-to-a-good-home group and be gone by the afternoon. Op shops and the Salvage Shed at the Ballina tip generally won't take mattresses at all for hygiene reasons, so don't load it up expecting to donate it. Bed bases, bedside tables and frames are a different story; the Salvage Shed (Tue to Fri 8.30 to 3.30, Sat and Sun 10 to 3) takes furniture in good nick.
Anything with stains, sag or a smell goes to the tip. Nobody wants it, and offering it wastes everyone's time.
What about mattress recycling?
Ballina's tip doesn't run a separate mattress recycling stream on its public fee table; mattresses go in with mixed waste. Some NSW councils and private recyclers strip mattresses for the steel springs and foam, but the nearest options are outside the Northern Rivers and charge more than the Ballina gate fee. If recycling matters to you, the steel bed frame and any metal base can go in Ballina's free scrap metal pile, which is the one part of a bed the tip genuinely recovers.
