Fridge Disposal Ballina: Why the Tip Charges $40 (2026)
Fridge disposal in Ballina has one rule that trips everybody up: the tip takes your old fridge for free if it's been degassed and has the certificate to prove it, and charges $40 if it hasn't. Every other whitegood (washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, oven) is free scrap metal, no questions asked. Why does the Ballina tip charge $40 for a fridge?
Because a fridge, freezer or air conditioner still contains refrigerant gas unless a licensed technician has removed it. Refrigerants are potent greenhouse gases and it's illegal under national law to vent them, so the tip has to pay someone to degas each unit before it can be crushed as scrap. The $40 covers that. Bring a degassing certificate from a licensed technician and the fridge goes in the free scrap metal pile instead.
What "degassed" means and who does it
Degassing is a licensed refrigeration technician recovering the refrigerant from the sealed system into a recovery cylinder. It takes ten minutes with the right gear and it's a job you can't legally do yourself; refrigerant handling in Australia needs an ARCtick licence.
You can get a fridge degassed at home by a local refrigeration or air-con tech, who'll give you a certificate or a tagged label. Whether that's worth doing depends on the call-out fee. If a tech wants $60 to $90 to come out, you're better off paying the tip's $40. If you're already having an air-con serviced and can add the old bar fridge to the visit, ask; it's often cheap as an add-on.
The certificate needs to travel with the fridge to the tip. Tape it to the door.
Ballina tip fees for whitegoods
At the Ballina Resource Recovery Centre (169 Southern Cross Drive, West Ballina, open 8am to 4pm seven days except public holidays):
- Fridge, freezer or air conditioner with a degassing certificate: free (sorted scrap metal).
- Fridge, freezer or air conditioner without a certificate: $40 each.
- Washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, oven, hot water system: free as scrap metal, as long as the load is 100 per cent metal.
- E-waste (TVs, computers, microwaves): free.
The scrap metal pile is separate from the weighbridge lane, so a car with just a washing machine in it shouldn't be paying anything. Tell the gate attendant it's scrap. Full fee list and hours on the Ballina tip page.
What the other Northern Rivers tips charge for a fridge
The $40 isn't unusual. Across the region (checked August 2026):
- Byron (Myocum): $50 per fridge or air conditioner, no free option listed.
- Lismore: the fridge fee sits on a metals sub-page; Lismore's Nimbin Transfer Station charges $31 degassed and $52 gassed, which is a fair guide to the Lismore rate.
- Nammoona (Casino): about $34.
- Kyogle: free for Kyogle Shire residents.
- Stotts Creek (Tweed): $23 each.

Getting the fridge there
The fee is the easy part. A fridge is 60 to 100 kg, taller than a ute tray is wide, and needs to travel upright (lay a fridge on its side and the compressor oil runs into the lines; it may never work again, which matters if the tip shop wants it). You need a trailer or a ute with a tailgate, two people, a trolley and straps.
Empty it, defrost it, tape the doors shut, and wedge it upright. If it's a working fridge in decent condition, ring the Salvage Shed at the tip first (Tue to Fri 8.30am to 3.30pm, Sat and Sun 10am to 3pm); a working fridge that someone can use is worth more to them than another crushed carcass.

Other things people ask
Does the tip take a fridge with food in it? Empty it first. A fridge that's been off for a week with a roast in it is a biohazard and the attendant can refuse it.
Can I put a bar fridge in the red bin? No. It's e-waste and refrigerant; the truck won't take it and it's not allowed in kerbside bins.
Does anyone collect old fridges for free? Scrap metal collectors sometimes will, because a fridge carcass has resale value, but they still need the gas dealt with and most now charge for fridges specifically because of it. Washing machines are a different story; a free scrappie will often take those.
