Skip Bin vs Tip Run: Real Northern Rivers Prices 2026
Skip bin or tip run? Most of the comparisons you'll find online are written by skip companies, so here's one from the other side, with local numbers and an honest answer about when the skip wins. Short version: a skip bin is a container you fill yourself over a few days and pay for whether it's full or not; a tip run is a crew and a trailer that loads your stuff and takes it away in an hour. For most Northern Rivers households the tip run is cheaper and faster; for a big renovation the skip is the right call.
Is a skip bin cheaper than a tip run?
Usually not for a household job. A 2 cubic metre mini skip in Byron has been quoted at around $250 plus GST (so about $275) for a few days' hire, and some local skip firms charge by weight on top at rates like $38.50 per 100 kg. A tip run for the same volume of junk, loaded by a two-person crew with the tip fee included, is $240 for a half trailer or $330 to $380 for a full heaped trailer. The skip wins when you need a bin on site for two weeks of demolition.
What a skip bin actually costs here
Skip pricing in the Northern Rivers is harder to pin down than tip fees, because most companies quote by phone. What we've seen quoted locally (August 2026):
- 2 m³ mini skip: roughly $250 plus GST in Byron Shire, based on a quote shared on a local Facebook thread. Cheaper in Lismore and Casino, dearer on the coast.
- Weight-based operators: at least one North Coast skip company publishes $38.50 per 100 kg, which is more than the Ballina tip's $34.60 per 100 kg household rate. You're paying the gate fee plus a margin, then loading it yourself.
- Hire period: typically 3 to 7 days. Longer costs extra.
- Weight limits: mini skips carry a weight cap (often around 250 to 300 kg for a 2 m³). Fill it with tiles or soil and you get an excess-weight bill.
- Placement: on your driveway is fine; on the street usually needs a council permit, which adds cost and paperwork.
- The catch: you pay the full price for a half-full bin, and the neighbours will happily top it up overnight.

What a tip run costs
Two ways to do it.
DIY. Own or hire a trailer, load it, drive to the tip, pay by weight. A 6x4 trailer of mixed household waste (about 350 kg) costs roughly $121 at Ballina, $105 to $144 at Lismore depending on whether you sort it, and $138 at Byron's Myocum tip. When the skip bin wins
Be fair to the skip. It's the better tool when:
- It's a renovation. Bathroom rip-out, kitchen demo, deck rebuild. You're generating rubble over two weeks and you want somewhere to throw it as you go.
- You're doing the labour anyway. Tradies on site, or you've got a strong mate and time.
- The volume is big and steady. Above 4 to 6 cubic metres a skip's per-cubic-metre price drops and a trailer service is making multiple trips.
- Heavy inert waste. Bricks, concrete and tiles are cheaper by the tonne at the tip ($22.60 per 100 kg sorted at Ballina, $65 per tonne at Stotts Creek) and a skip company that specialises in clean fill can beat a trailer crew.
When the tip run wins
- One-off clear-outs. A couch, a fridge and a mattress do not need a bin sitting in your driveway for a week. That's a single rubbish removal visit.
- End of lease and holiday lets. Real estate wants it gone by Friday; a skip delivered Monday doesn't help. Our end-of-lease rubbish removal is same-day.
- No room for a skip. Units, townhouses, steep Lennox or Ocean Shores driveways, Byron streets with no parking. A trailer parks where a car parks.
- Mixed household junk. Half of what comes out of a shed is scrap metal, e-waste or green waste, all of which the tip takes free or cheap. Sorted on the trailer, that's money off; thrown in a skip, it's charged as mixed waste.
- You'd rather not lift it. Obvious, but it's the reason most people ring.
The honest middle ground
If you're in Byron Shire and home on a weekday, council's free 8x5 courtesy trailer beats both of us: no hire fee, just the gate fee (and your two $50 vouchers can cover that).
